Good fast food in Laramie, Wyoming

We all know that it’s probably not good for you, but sometimes we need a meal that is quick and cheap. For me as a University of Wyoming student, this is definitely true. There are times when it is a luxury to get a quick bite out. However, even though most of the franchises are serviceable for a fast bite, I do have some first choices to go to. If you want a decent lunch or dinner without spending too much, here are my suggestions and favorites, complete with an interactive map.

Subway

This may be a dangerous statement, but I think if I had to pick one restaurant chain option to only go to for the rest of my life, I would choose Subway. There are two Subway locations in Laramie, but my preferred haunt is the one on Grand Avenue across from the University of Wyoming dorms. I like to come here after taking my COVID-19 tests. Subway is best known for its footlong sandwiches, but it also offers salads, mini pizzas and new protein bowls. A customer can either get take out or sit in at one of the tables within the small space. The primary reason why I like Subway is the expediency. I know what I like, I like what I know, and I can probably get in and out in under five minutes if the line isn’t too long. To fair though, I have not actually timed it.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers

Freddy’s is a bit out of the way from some of the other entries on this list, but I would argue it is worth considering. This new contender in the food landscape of Laramie doesn’t slack off. It sells sandwiches primarily, but the big draw is the frozen custard. My favorite is the “Dirt n Worms” variety. The fries are also good; they aren’t large and covered in salt like other place, but instead shoestring size with a little bit of seasoning. Besides the food, what I enjoy about Freddy’s is the atmosphere. If you venture inside to have a sit in meal, the interior has a 1950s, 1960s feel to it, but I don’t know if this intentional design or is just my perception of it. There is a wall that is covered with photos of the chain’s namesake, a World War 2 veteran. The service is also fairly fast, so it’s not bad choice for something simple yet good.

Wendy’s

Like Freddy’s, Wendy’s is farther away from the city of Laramie, but not as much. Wendy’s is one of my lesser visited stops, yet still an enjoyable experience. It primarily sells sandwiches, but I feel like it leans more into burgers. They also have some salads and what I will describe as the iconic “Frosty.” I’ve heard that the breakfast is supposed to be good, but I cannot confirm that from firsthand experience. I have occasionally seen a bus parked in the lot of this Wendy’s, so I’m sure the influx from them is a nice boost. For me, the draw of Wendy’s is the service. Whether I’ve gone via the drive through or inside, the people working seem to be pretty nice people. There is a sort of spirited quality to the employees, and I don’t think I’m the only one who sees things this way.

Arby’s

Among all of my selections on this list, Arby’s is what I would describe as the quietest. I’ve never seen it too busy at any given time. However, similar to Wendy’s, it is not one of my frequent stops for a quick eat out, so I may be dodging the rush times. Arby’s is mainly known for its roast beef sandwiches, but it also has Greek gyros, salads, and wraps. If I need to get something then return to the apartment, I generally come to Arby’s and get a Beef n Cheddar Classic with five chicken tenders to supplement. A couple of nitpicks that I do have with Arby’s are its small parking lot and winding drive through. I like to think that this design wasn’t completely intentional, but it does make getting into the space a bit difficult.

Domino’s

Domino’s isn’t technically fast food, since some orders can take time to prepare. However, it’s going on my list as an honorable mention for its proximity to the campus. It’s offerings include pizzas, pasta, salads, and oven baked sandwiches. You cannot eat in at Domino’s, only delivery and carryout, but that’s understandable for a pizza place. Perhaps it is just my perception, but there is something about pizza that is comforting. I have good memories of me and my sister having a Domino’s sandwich and pasta on a late night, then having pizza leftovers the next morning. Be advised though, some of the items can be a little more on the expensive side when compared to the other selections on the list.

Closing Thoughts

And this concludes my list on some of the better fast food joints in good old Laradise. Now, this list is just my opinions. I have left off some other franchises that you may feel are better, but this is my list and I’m sticking to it.
